Betty Jo Byars, 82, passed away shortly after a cancer diagnosis on August 4, 2023 in Knoxville, TN. She is survived by her daughters Maria Richardson and Lora Benns (Eric); grandchildren Christina Richardson, Isaac, Madison and Gabriella Benns; brother Eugene Byars (Ann) and sister Kay Blackwell (Michael).
The daughter of a Methodist minister, she grew up in a steadfast faith in Jesus as her Lord and savior. An avid reader and life-long learner, she earned several degrees, including a doctorate in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Jo’s early teaching career included the instruction of diverse students ranging in ages from elementary school through college, even teaching on a Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. She also enjoyed a second career as a social worker with the Knox County Department of Children’s Services.
She was an accomplished pianist and organist, playing in many churches starting at the age of 12. Jo was also a skilled seamstress, quilter and cook. Her primary love language was food and she delighted in showing hospitality to strangers, friends, and family, serving them her homecooked meals and delicious desserts. She loved gathering friends and family around her piano to sing and play a variety of styles of lively music.
Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia in 2018, Jo shared her sweet spirit and smile with visitors and caregivers at Oakwood Senior Living. She influenced many people throughout her life, creating vibrant spaces for fellowship and community in her home. She will be missed by us all.
